So, over the last couple of weeks, I have started this shawl about 12 times now and knitted back I don’t know how many rows. I am at the end of my last nerve with this pattern. Here is what I have knitted back on the needles and have completed row 17.
It is such a cute shawl, featured in the Creative Knitting magazine Wraps, Capelets & Cowls. Looking at my knitting and the pattern, I don’t think I am doing it right, but can’t for the life of me, figure out what I am doing wrong. It is just a bunch of yarn overs and K2tog and Make 1 stitches. And I am afraid to go any further for fear of not coming up with the correct number of stitches at the end of the row…again. The pattern is Roman Stripe, which I have never done before, but doesn’t seem to be difficult. In fact, the pattern says it is for “A Confident Beginner” giving it a ease 2 rating out of 6. I have been knitting for about 30 years, so I think I am beyond a confident beginner, but just can’t figure this one out. If anyone knows this pattern and can tell what I am doing wrong, I would greatly appreciate it. On a side note…I LOVE the Addi Turbo needles!! They glide so nicely and may just be my new favorite needles. I give them an A+ rating.
In between knitting on this and waiting for threads and beads for Pixie Anne, I have picked Ella up again. Here is where I left off last night:
She still has a lot of yellow, but it is so much more relaxing than knitting on that shawl! I am also still working on my craft room; adding things and organizing my supplies. Having fun 🙂
So, have you ever just scrapped a project because it wasn’t coming out like you wanted or had been working on it too long and decided enough was enough? I have done it once, and am seriously thinking about doing it again with this knitting project.

Thank you. I do hope I can continue on, but I have my doubts. I haven’t tried going any further as of yet. Still having fun getting things into my craft room.

Thank you for giving me “no more tries”, Jessica. I really don’t have any patience. I think it’s more of not letting this pattern beat me. I haven’t tried to go any further with it, but when I do, I hope it works out. If not, then I will trash it!

Awww .. I can’t relate to the knitting but I can relate to the frustration. I think I’d move on to another project and maybe give it another go sometime in the future when all the frustration has left my being completely 😀 If it still doesn’t come out right by then, it wasn’t meant to be. But the shawl sure looks cute and your choice of color is perfect! ❤

The color is beautiful, isn’t it? I haven’t tried to put any more stitches into it as of yet. If it doesn’t work out when I do, then I will be done with it and will have to find another use for the pretty yarn. Wish me luck 🙂

You are right, Joey. I have put it aside for now. Until I get the courage to pick it back up and hold my breath through another row. If it doesn’t work out, then I will move on from it. Ella will keep me busy. All the hours I put into trying to knit that shawl could have gotten me so much further into Ella. I can’t wait to get the bottom half of her dress done. So many ruffles and folds and pretty flowers. I am still enjoying finding places to put things in my craft room. I have another ribbon shelf and some file folders coming today, so that will be fun to play with. I will be thinking of you this weekend while you are at the Expo having so much fun! Can’t wait to see what you find.

🙂 I know the feeling. Sometimes a project just does not work for you. I have the same thing. I cut the pattern pieces for my Becky bear, and put them on the table for sewing, but just did not really pick them up. Each time I went for the knitting. I am not really getting the feel for the “fur” the kit came with. I am considering other “fur” now, I prefer the “old school” look with the longer mohair. I did buy new kits 🙂 in the meantime.
Ella is stunning. Those ruffles and flowers are really going to make her dress. Its so satisfying to do a large project and see it develop.
Love your craft room, its really great. You did a fabulous job with it. 🙂

Thanks, Joey. I have been creating some cards the last few days…in my new craft room! Still have an issue with the floor, so I have been sitting at the side desk until I can figure out what to do. Still adding stuff and organizing, too. As for the projects that just don’t catch our interest, we just have to let ’em go 🙂 At least until they call to us again.

Totally agree with you on those projects. 🙂 they will come back some day, its not like they are completely gone, just not happening now.

Good idea, Marilyn! I don’t have a shop that is real close, but I could plan a day to visit a shop and see if they can help me figure it out. I still have lots of yellow to go on Ella. It really is a big, beautiful gown she is wearing. But every stitch brings me that much closer 😉 I think we all have to allow ourselves to trash a project that is frustrating or not what it once was when we first started. It is a hard thing for me to do, but am learning it’s ok.

I can’t give any knitting advice, but I do love the color that you chose for your capelet! The stitching looks great. All of that yellow is sunny and cheery.

It is pink, right 😉 I love the yarn, too and do hope I can get this pattern figured out. So much yellow can become drab and dreary, but so far I am ok with it 🙂 I had to wait until my boys moved out to get a craft room and even then I was nervous about doing it (I hear they come back, LOL) But hubby actually made it happen and I am so grateful for him. So when biggest goes off to college, don’t hesitate to turn that room into a craft heaven for yourself 😉

I agree I can’t give knitting advice, but you deserve a medal for sticking with it. I think the advice to find a knitting shop to have them help you is probably the best. Love the pink! Ella is just plodding along, huh. I have confidence you will finish her off in no time.

Taking my knitting to a shop is a great idea. Maybe they can figure out what I am doing wrong. I will work on Ella until the next “Squirrel” comes along, LOL

Your cross-stitch is coming along nicely. I can fully sympathise with the knitting though. I have trouble with any lacey stitch now when it would have been fairly easy years ago. So, I am afraid I don’t do ‘complicated’ any more. I stick to plain knitting and cables – I can cope with those. Te he. Good luck to you with the shawl, I really hope the pattern ‘clicks’ for you. It’s a lovely colour you are knitting too. Will be nice when completed. The person above who advised taking it to a knitting shop is a good idea as they may even have access to info on ‘failed patterns’. Good luck 🙂

Thank you, Mogsya. So far I am sticking with the cross stitch. I may venture out this week to a yarn shop to see if they can help. I did check to see if there were any corrections to the pattern and couldn’t find any. Did find a correction for another pattern in the book, but not the one I am working on. I definitely agree that sticking to simple is way less stressful.

Sorry to hear you are having a hard time with the knitting.. My suggestion is to put those little stitch markers as you complete 1 set of pattern.. so it makes the counting easier.. and sometimes with YO.. we may get lost with all those extra stitches.. the stitch markers can be a life saver at times. 🙂 hope that helps 🙂
