There’s A New Mermaid on the Beach

Mirabilia came out with a new pattern on the 15th, and Nora did not disappoint!

Introducing Aphrodite Mermaid.  I just love her!  And while I wanted her, I was going to refrain from purchasing her until I completed something.  But my wonderful hubby went and ordered her, the bead pack and the specialty threads and she arrived in my mailbox on Friday.  And while I tried to continue on with the Mira Mystery, Aphrodite was singing her Siren song and I couldn’t resist!

Now we all know that I am weak when it comes to mermaids, so a new start it is! I started stitching her Monday night.  I am stitching her on 16ct Aida Kaleidoscope by Hand Dyed Fabrics by Stephanie.  Just love all the colors in the fabric and knew it would be perfect for Aphrodite.

So this is how I left the Mira Mystery:

I spent so much time frogging this one the last few days I worked on it.  So it was time to put it down for a rest.  I am thinking I should put all of my WIP’s into a rotation so that I can get some finishes in.  I probably have 8 or 9 cross stitch projects going now.  Eeeek. I will tell you, working with DMC again is wonderful!!  The coverage is so much better than the Weeks Dye Works.

  2. Aphrodite is a beauty.I think I have about 4 wip stitching project. Sometimes you just have to begin a new one😄. And about 3 unfinished knitting project.

  4. The new one is simply gorgeous!! I know how you feel about having to frog and wanting to set it aside. When I had to frog mine I just cut my losses, literally, and didn’t bother taking the thread out. It’s in such a small portion of the fabric that I don’t think it’ll matter when I use it for something else. 🙂

  5. Aphrodite is on my list to purchase when the LNS gets her in. I currently have 2 WIP’s. This is my first time having more than one at a time. I’m not liking it. One is a Christmas gift. The other is a deal with our youngest if he does his work I will work on it. He loves to see my progress.

    1. You are absolutely in control! I would like to get back to that. It seems like I am always thinking about what is left unfinished, so having 1 project will get rid of those thoughts running around in my head. I hope to get there by the end of the year. I know it’s a stretch, but it’s a goal.

  6. Looks like she is going to be beautiful ! I love the colours. Can you wash hand dyed Aida?
    I have one large advanced project on the go but in between I have finished up smaller Christmas ornaments. Ornaments are my favorite quickie projects.

    1. She is going to be beautiful. Can’t wait to stitch on her some more. I believe that most dyers don’t recommend washing. I never wash my stitching’s anyway. I'[m pretty careful about washing my hands and using scroll bar covers. I am always afraid my floss colors will run and I’d ruin something I put so much work into. You sound like you are very in control of your projects, too. I give you kudos for that!

  7. I have one project going, and I’ve had multiples going maybe twice in 30 years, both because I needed to start something that was a gift and had a time limit. I’m apparently a weird stitcher on that count; I don’t like having multiples going.

    1. I don’t think you are weird. I used to be like that. Until someone said “try a rotation and you will get a lot of things done all at once”. I wish I had never. Because now it seems I can’t get caught up. But I will. I hope it is by the end of this year, but I will keep trying to get back to 1 project. The designers make it very hard 😉 Especially Miss Nora, who is my favorite. She is always coming out with something beautiful that I just have to have and start right away.

      1. I’ve tried it, and didn’t like it at all. I generally read three or four books at a time, and stitch while I do other things (watching baseball is my favorite), so multi-tasking isn’t the issue. Maybe it’s that I don’t really enjoy starting a new project. I love finishing them, and being in the process, but starting is fussy and annoying to me, so the prospect of starting a new one isn’t that tempting for me.

  9. I have a few projects going, but I prefer one at a time because I’m trying to be better about finishing things I start. I love that your husband got you the kit–mine would not know how to do that! My stitching obsession is a complete mystery to him. 🙂

    1. My hubby is very supportive of my hobby. And he wouldn’t know what to get. He knows I love mermaids. He stopped at a shop on his way to work and thought he would be able to purchase everything and bring it home. He didn’t understand that the 15th is just a release date on the facebook groups. So the shop owner told him she would have to order and call when it came in. He ordered everything, including DMC. He then called me from the parking lot of the shop to let me know he ordered it so that I wouldn’t. I told him to cancel the DMC’s as I have quite the stash already. He is a sweetie and does enable me every now and then 😉 So now I have another project started, because of him, LOL But I am happy to start her.

  10. Another beautiful start, the fabric is perfect.
    The Mira mystery looks so pretty on that pink fabric, she will be a masterpiece!
    Yes, I also have WIPS,too many to count. lol
    Sometimes it bothers me, but then I think, it’s a good addiction. 🙂
    I stitch whatever calls to me at the moment.

  13. Sleepykittystitches, I know exactly what you mean about getting fabric and it not being what you want. For that reason, I started stock piling fabric 😉 I joined Stephanies’s fabric of the month club and receive a fabric every month. I have also purchased fabrics from different dyers because I like them. Now, when I get a pattern, I search my stash first. It is much easier to match a pattern to a fabric I already have, rather than try to find a fabric to match to a pattern.

  14. Hi!

    I try to do one project at a time but sometimes will have a few that are put aside in order to start something new. Right now I have one project that is the focus and another that is 75% or so completed that I want to also get to. I have 3 more I want to get to someday that are only about 25% or less progress.

    Once I have been working on one project it is hard to switch because I get familiar with the symbols/floss colors and the process of the particular project and I know if I switch to a different project and then later come back, I will have to “get to know” that project all over again. Not to mention the possibility of not completing the project.

  15. Beautiful work! You mentioned that you need to put your projects into a rotation…. so do I. I quilt and cross stitch and can never seem to get a balance so that my projects get finished in a timely manner. If you figure out a good rotations schedule please post it. It might inspire me to do the same!

    1. Thank you, LucyCrafter. It is so hard to spread the love between our projects, isn’t it? For now I will work on what I want until I get bored or need a change. I would love to finish Aphrodite before I switch projects. We will see how it goes. Good luck with your projects 🙂

  19. Yet another gorgeous new start! 🙂 I think this will look stunning when finished. Can’t wait to see your progress on this.

    I always have multiple projects on the go. Partly because I have the attention span of a hungry butterfly in a meadow. And partly because there are way too many wonderful designs out there and I have absolutely no willpower 😀 It bothers me sometimes but as long as I am actively working on something and not completely ignoring my stitching I can hold the guilt at bay 🙂

    1. Thank you, Diya. And can you believe I have started yet another project? I will post progress pictures today of both Blossom Collector and Aphrodite. Sheesh, I need to place myself into addiction rehab! LOL I think I am really at my limit of WIP’s. I think I am up to 11 now. You are right; I am blaming the designers! I have no willpower either 😉

  21. Hi! Beautiful work! Can I ask what frame you are using to hold your cross-stitch? I am constantly looking for one that is large enough to hold my Mirabilia/Nora Corbett patterns but they always seem to pull on the fabric. Thanks!

    1. Hi Melissa. Thank you for your sweet comment. I use a split rod scroll frame. The ones that I have are around 20 years old. I would not suggest getting the ones from Joann’s or Michaels that are made by a company that begins with an H. I can’t remember the name, but they are very poorly made with wood splinters everywhere and the side bars did not screw properly. I am still looking for some newer ones, but haven’t found anything yet. American Dream Products does make a scroll system (I have 36″ scrolls from them), but they are not the split rods. they have a fabric piece stapled to the rod and you sew or baste your fabric onto it. A bit of an extra step, but they are very nice products. Hope this info helped you in some way. Thanks for visiting 🙂
